Video game mascots have been around since, well, the beginning of gaming. They’re a good way to get gamers interested in a product, even though the age of mascots may very well be over nowadays in 2021. With everything being online, you only need good marketing to sell products and that good marketing rarely involves mascots, which may be the main reason why PlayStation is the only major gaming company without a true mascot. Nintendo has Mario, Xbox has Master Chief, Sega has Sonic and PlayStation has a bunch of different mascots.
It all started with Polygon Man in adverts for the original PlayStation, but he didn’t last long as the mascot since he’s just one big, creepy, levitating head. Crash Bandicoot may be the most recognizable PlayStation mascot, but he actually hasn’t been a PS mascot in over 20 years. PaRappa the Rapper is another character lost to time. His games were so good, but most casual gamers don’t even know who he is. Spyro the dragon is another legendary PlayStation character who didn’t last long as a mascot. Then, you have two iconic duos in Jak & Daxter and Ratchet & Clank who left their mark in the PS2 era along with Sly Cooper. Modern PS mascots include Kratos, Sackboy and Nathan Drake.
There’s more to PlayStation mascots than just that so enjoy the video, let me know who you think is the best PlayStation mascot in the comments section below and don’t forget to subscribe to TheGamer for more gaming content.
