There are a few sayings out there that are universally true, including it’s hard to keep a good thing going, all good things must come to an end and you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone. These can apply to pretty much anything in life, but I’m going to be using them in the context of video game developers because why not. There’s a whole lot that goes into video game development that we don’t know about. Unless you’re a AAA studio just swimming in money, it’s difficult to find sustained success in the gaming sphere. It’s all AAA studios and small indie teams nowadays because those are the most efficient teams, but even the best fall down sometimes.
Midway Games has existed from 1958 to 2010. They were one of the biggest studios for a long time, with notable games such as Mortal Kombat and NBA Jam. If they can cease operations, any company can. Origin Systems is another company that eventually closed down, but a lot of their staff members went on to do big things for other studios. Ensemble Studios existed from 1995 to 2009 and made legendary RTS games, such as Age of Empires, Age of Mythology and Halo Wars.
There’s more video game studios who ceased operations than just those so enjoy the video, let me know what the best defunct developer is in the comments section below and don’t forget to subscribe to TheGamer for more gaming content.
